Optimal management of airway clearance
In the presence of excess mucus in the lungs, the following strategies optimize airway clearance:
- Take medications correctly – using the right technique and in the correct order with relation to other airway clearance strategies (Correct Use of Medications)
- Drink adequate fluids. Unless on fluid restrictions, it is generally recommended, depending on height and weight, for adults to drink 2 litres of water per day, increasing that amount with exercise (Hydration and Humidification)
- Daily aerobic exercise at an appropriate intensity (Exercise Prescription)
- Daily airway clearance routine (Choosing an AC Technique)
- Action plan discussed with GP or respiratory physician (Bronchiectasis Action Plan)
