Management Plan

Optimal management of airway clearance

In the presence of excess mucus in the lungs, the following strategies optimize airway clearance:
  1. Take medications correctly – using the right technique and in the correct order with relation to other airway clearance strategies (Correct Use of Medications)
  2. Drink adequate fluids. Unless on fluid restrictions, it is generally recommended, depending on height and weight, for adults to drink 2 litres of water per day, increasing that amount with exercise (Hydration and Humidification)
  1. Daily aerobic exercise at an appropriate intensity (Exercise Prescription)
  1. Daily airway clearance routine (Choosing an AC Technique)
  1. Action plan discussed with GP or respiratory physician (Bronchiectasis Action Plan)
